OVIEDO CITY INFO
Oviedo, the capital of the Principality of Asturias, close
to the Cantabrian Sea coast, is an important centre for
cultural tourism in Spain. The origin of the city is dated
as far as year 761. The city, crossroad of the well-known
Camino de Santiago, possesses important monumental
hoards. The Cathedral with its Holy Chamber heads the long
list.
In and around the ancient city the visitor finds a group of
monuments characteristic of the pre-Romanesque architectural
style
declared by UNESCO as World Heritage: Santa María del
Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo, San Julián de los Prados,
Santa Cristina de Lena, are within the most remarkable.
The cultural offer of the city is very wide: museums,
exhibitions, opera and music festivals, film cycles, and
theater; while in the urban landscape the visitor find many
attractive sculptures, parks, palaces and mansions of the
17th and 18th centuries, among others.Mountains, green fields, forests, rivers, sea, rugged cliffs
and fertile meadows compose the Asturian landscape. Almost
one third of the territory of Asturias has been declared a
Protected Natural Zone. This is the source of the excellent
quality raw products used by the rich and delicious Asturian
gastronomy. And, of course, after a good dinner a lively and
animated nigh waits for you in Oviedo. In alternative to a
formal dinner you can go “de tapas” following the routes of
Cider, wine or many others ….
